We believe that public service is a noble calling. It brings an opportunity to make a lasting and profound impact on individual lives and improve the policies and programs that affect many. We found our passion in public service through working in higher education. When we embarked in our careers over twenty years ago, we were well aware of and willing to make the sacrifices necessary to put in the long hours, live on the lower pay compared to the private sector, and work in environments with limited resources.
But we were often surprised by and not prepared for some of the challenges of maintaining a meaningful career in public service. We wrote this book and created the podcast to share the lessons we have learned firsthand, by observing others, and through research to meet those challenges. By sharing these lessons, we hope to help you prepare for challenges so you can respond to them proactively and achieve the impact you desire, while maintaining the optimistic and positive attitude that attracted you to public service in the first place.
Together, the book and podcast include tips, informational resources, discussion questions, and spotlights interviews with higher education professionals whose efforts serve as inspiration to us all. We selected the tips and tools we presented because they are easy to adopt and implement for everyone and immediately effective. We hope that this book and podcast are equally useful to individual professionals and professional development efforts conducted by higher education institutions.
