Dr. A. Yvette Myrick has worked in grant writing and grant management in various career roles. This passion for grant writing and helping others to build their organizational capacity through grant writing was the driving force to become a co-principal at Capacity+ with Dr. Estelle Young. In addition to the extensive background in grant management, Yvette has strong background in adult education and higher education. For over 25 years, she has held numerous adult learning positions from dean, program director, associate professor, retention coordinator, and adjunct faculty. Yvette has lived and worked in Maryland, California, North Carolina, and Colorado.
As a program director and dean at a college, Yvette provided leadership and supervision for a program that spanned 11 campuses. She supervised faculty and staff. She maintained department and grant budgets. She collaborated with faculty and staff to develop 5-year strategic plans with outcomes and measurements. She collaborated with different departments to analyze problems and implement plans with solutions for more effective and efficient results in student success, retention, and completion. She utilized evidence-based data to make informed decisions. She initiated, planned, and implemented student resources such as online registration assistance in English and Spanish. She also created a bilingual career and college navigator position to assist students in reaching their career and educational goals.
In other administration roles, Yvette hired and supervised full-time faculty, adjuncts, lead instructors, administrative assistants, data entry specialists, a college and career navigator, retention counselors, and work study students. She also supervised volunteers and AmeriCorp VISTA staff. Additionally, she was responsible for the onboard process for faculty and staff. She managed budgets and grants.
Yvette values professional development for growth, improvement, knowledge sharing, and networking. She has collaborated with college leadership, businesses, government agencies, community stakeholders, and nonprofit organizations to identify training needs. She has planned, organized, and implemented professional development trainings and conferences to address the needs of attendees and the community. She has created tools for attendees to provide their evaluation and feedback from trainings and professional development as a roadmap for planning future conferences and professional development opportunities. Many professional development opportunities that Yvette planned and implemented were statewide and hosted hundreds of attendees.
In addition to planning professional development events, Yvette is actively involved in presenting at conferences and creating webinars. She has presented at conferences across the United States as well as in England and Barbados. She has presented on diverse topics such as student success, effective retention strategies, college completion, student engagement, online learning, growth mindset, and achieving goals. In addition to the presentations, she co-created, with Dr. Estelle Young, the following webinars: The Grant Institute for Program Design and Grant Writing and Building a Network of Positive People in Your Workplace.
Yvette has a passion for grant writing to help others to build capacity to achieve their organizational goals and outcomes. She has collaborated with community partners and organizations to submit high quality grant applications. Yvette's collaboration and community partners and organizations extends beyond grants. She actively works with individuals, community partners, and organizations to plan local and national events and activities to raise awareness to the needs of people in our society. The events and activities crosses diverse ages, ethnicities, nationalities, and socio-economic backgrounds.
She has effectively assisted in writing federal, state, and local grants that totaled over $750,000. The grants were funding for various needs such as education, mentoring, community development, supplies, and staff. Some grants were for short term for one year or long term for several years. She has worked extensively in all specifics of grant management. from submitting applications, implementation to monitoring and evaluation.
Yvette co-authored the book, "Thriving in Higher Education Careers," with Dr. Estelle Young. They also host the podcast, Thriving in Higher Education. The book and podcast provide tips, strategies, and resources that can help to navigate the professional and personal journey. The tips and strategies are easy to adopt and implement, low or no cost, and effective.
Dr. Myrick received a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore, M.S. in Adult and Continuing Education from Coppin State University, and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from The George Washington University.
